If you have a double switching setup you should find an additional wire usually red in your ceiling box.

Most new ceiling fans can be wired to either a single switch or a double switch. The source hot wire is spliced to the black fan wire to hardwire it directly to the circuit and to a pigtail connecting the switch. Wiring ceiling fan and light with one switch this method allows you to turn on the fan and the light from one single wall switch cutting out the necessity to use the pull chain every time you want to adjust the fan. Turn on the breaker and test the switches.

The main thing to consider wiring a ceiling fan and light is determining how you want that fan to be controlled. Make sure the box is rated for a ceiling fan. The fan control switch usually connects to the black wire and the light kit switch to the red wire of the 3 way cable. Connect the black and blue wires coming out of your fan.

This will allow you to control your fan and lights with a single switch. In this wiring the source is at the switch and 3 wire cable runs from there to the fan and light. For some that will be any combination from no switches using the included pull chains for powering the fan and or light and having separate switches for the light and fan. Line voltage enters the switch outlet box and the line wire connects to each switch.

Fold the pigtails and connected wires neatly into the switch box. The wiring is now complete. First turn off power to the fixture at the electrical panel. With single switch wiring power to the fan is controlled by a standard single pole wall switch like a regular light switch.

Make a pigtail of the ground wire using two 6 inch lengths of bare wire and connect one ground wire to the fan switch and one to the light switch. Reattach the switch to the ears of the box and the switch cover. Wiring a fan and light to a single switch. Screw the switches onto the box then install a cover plate.

Connect white wires together. The source neutral and ground are spliced through to the fan location. Switched lines and neutral connect to a 3 wire cable that travels to the light fan outlet box in the ceiling. Twist the copper ends of the black and blue wires together like you did with the previous wires. Second remove the light fixture in the room. Connect the green copper wires together. If you re wiring a ceiling fan with light with one switch though this additional wire won t be needed.
